Her eyes were riveted on her book, and she was smiling. She turned the page and laughed again, then looked up to see him watching her. 

“Was I too loud?” she asked. “I hope I didn’t bother you.” 

He smiled back, a genuine smile that felt foreign and yet somehow right. “No. You’re not bothering me.”

Guys can you believe I watched OUAT initially because (me as a medievalist in training who actually want to be a folklorist but folklorists got even less funding) I wanted to find more example materials of medievalism and folklore adaptation in modern media for my fuckon essay and said sure why not throw some disney roast in there and then the content of every episode was like stabbing the foundation of my academic and personal existence

Golden Cuffs by @kelyon. This is like... dark smut. Like BDSM and lots of psychological introspection on it. The sequel is set in Season 1 and pre-Season 1 Storybrooke and explores Gold and Lacey in such a setting. It's definitely got a dark romance sort of vibe.

Nothing is Innocent by @0ceanofdarkness. "The Dark One seeks his son in a land without magic, but he must obtain an elusive beast before the Dark Curse that will take him there can be cast."

Pride and Other Poisons by Hikari_no_Chibi. A Dark Victorian Rumbelle AU. "Gold is haunted by the First Carlist War, and Belle embodies everything he hates from his past. Expectations will crumble like the foundations of an old house, and it will be up to them to build something new on the rubble. Rated M for violence and substance abuse."

Shadow Manor by @suchadearie. "Mr. Gold sets out to find himself a wife that will bear him an heir for his estate. But his marriage to Belle French turns out to be a little more complicated than the mere business arrangement he had in mind."

Endless by @mareyshelley. Vampire AU. "Unable to pass up the opportunity to attend one of Storybrooke’s annual balls, Belle finds herself drawn to the old manor’s library and her unusual host."

Honestly most of her fics have a dark vibe I really like, so I would recommend anything she's written.

The Haunted Man by @nerdrumple. "When her father tries to arrange a marriage for her, Belle decides to take fate into her own hands - but seeking the help of Mr. Gold is its own winding, mysterious path. Gothic Romance Rumbelle AU."

It has been brought to my attention that I have not been annoying enough:

Why is rumple one of my favorite characters, you ask, @imhereonthekitchenfloor? Well...

I'm gonna be so real with you I am struggling to know where/how to start this because it is beyond my comprehension that people could not love him. Do you not love him? ,,,,,,,,,,,, ok

I'll start with what I don't like bc that's a much shorter list :) but it's not really stuff that I don't like about him it's mostly complaints I have with the writers. I don't mind a little evilness for good & in character content but he relapsed one too many times. It wasn't in character for him to become the dark one again in season 5. The Bear and the Bow should've been his final redemption. It would've been much more interesting to watch him grapple with recovery and improvement than watching him be a villain again just bc he's a good villain. He IS a good villain !! bc he's understandable. But it is what it is and he did become the dark one again and the mess that is the first half of season 6 did happen. Unfortunately. I HATE the romance plot with him and the evil queen and there is quite literally no justification for it so I just pretend that never happened :) but I can appreciate that his actual final redemption was really solid. We had to suffer to get there but it was a good ending 😫🙏

His Thing was that he could always justify every single bas thing he ever did as actually being for the greater good (his family). Everything he did was to get Bae back. Because he's a good dad. And to keep Belle safe. Because he loves her. In season 6 he hit rock bottom by trying to do something that couldn't be spun to be for the best interest of his family. He wanted to cut Gideon's fate so he wouldn't grow up to hate him instead of just... idk.... being a good dad????? And earning his love????? Ok king. Actually my biggest complaint about the entire series is the entire stupid series of events that led to that (Belle's dad was straight up evil for not waking her up bc he didn't want to "help rumple"??? And there was no explanation for Gideon in the dream. It doesn't really make sense that he showed up anyway but how do we know that was who he was fated to be why did he and Belle hang their whole belief system on a weird dream version of their kid) but whatever.

All of that was dumb but his redemption was real!!! He had the choice to gain "unlimited power" and break the rules of magic and make Belle love him and bring Bae back to life but HE DIDN'T!!!! because he finally understood the price of magic and was strong enough to do it on his own and not use magic for his own good BECAUSE he knew it would be bad for everyone else. He was never really evil. He was treated like crap his whole life and had some unhealthy reactions to it. He never had anything so he thought he needed everything. He never had any control so he wanted control over everything. And when he got his control and power he got addicted to it. He never loved it more than his family he was addicted to it. He had literal relapses (when he lied to Belle about the dagger when they got married. Yeah lying is bad but that was the most understandable thing be ever did lowkey. He redeemed himself and killed Pan and made peace with dying himself and then got brought back to life against his will and was kept in a literal cage as a literal slave for over a year being forced to do the exact kind of things he had finally overcome AND he had 2 minds in his head so on top of the physiological torture he also just quite literally went insane. Yeah it makes sense that he was a little Screwed Up after that. And wanted to release himself from the dagger without losing his power). He was strong enough at the end to truly put it behind him. And I know everyone hates season 7 but AT LEAST it gave rumbelle an entire lifetime of happiness and we know that he never relapsed again.

So :) yeah :) aside from that. He's hilarious. He's a good villain. He's the center of the entire story. He's smarter than everyone else. He's a good person but he doesn't even have to be bc I love when he's evil too. Lowkey highkey he was right fairly often. He's just a silly little guy! He's babygirl and he's my poor little meow meow and he's blorbo and he's beloved 🫶 the end.

Are there any Regina x Belle content somewhere?

I will go down with Swan Queen and Rumbelle ships but I feel like this crackship got sone misunderstood potential… I can’t possibely be the only one…

I’d ask things, but I always feel like I’m intruding or demanding things when I know writers hate that, so I never know what to say. Like, is it appropriate to ask about a specific scene, or is that demanding more content you’re not ready to put out? Or about a character’s mindset that wasn’t shown in the chapter, or is it offensive to do so and we’re purposely not meant to know, otherwise it would’ve been included? I just don’t want to overstep.

I think when a writer has made it clear that they welcome asks about their work, any of the above are acceptable - even actively wanted. We love talking about our work, and we love knowing that people enjoy it enough to want to know more about it! It could be that you thought of something we didn’t consider, or it could be that your ask inspires us to write a scene or take the fic in a direction we like better than what we’d originally planned.

Honestly, fic writers are starving for engagement. We want to talk to people about what we made so bad. If someone’s put out a post saying that they welcome asks about their work, I say go nuts. Ask to your heart’s content. The only things I’d consider off-limits would be unsolicited criticism and “when are you going to update {fic}?”. Other than that… try not to worry too hard about offending us. We’re not celebrities. We’re fellow fans. We’re all losers (affectionate) in fandom.

Now, if anyone has questions for my writing specifically, what I used to do was solicit questions to my characters every Tuesday. I’d put a post up called TMI Tuesday (a tradition I discovered from the Rumbelle fandom) where I’d encourage people to send me asks. People would ask one of my characters a question, and I’d answer in-character. It’s something I enjoy doing, but lack of interest made me eventually stop. If that’s something people would like to do with me, I could start up again.

Anyway, I hope this helps. If you have any other worries about talking to writers, feel free to let me know!

For Your Consideration

2023 year was my first year in the fandom (well, technically 2022 was my first year in the fandom and the year I made my Belle rp blog, but in terms of actually contributing something to the fandom 2023 was my first year).

I started it off with great ambitions regarding writing and gifing and editing. I ended up posting only a handful of gifsets, three ficlets, two of which I wrote for Rumbelle Showdown (shoutout to @jackabelle73 for hosting this wonderful event last year, by the way), and 0 fanvids/edits. I'm not particularly proud of it, and I really, really wanna make much more content this year. We'll see how it goes 😅

Anyway, I still decided to give participating in @the-chipped-cup-awards a try. It looked fun last year, when I was only a bystander.

Belle had never felt more content in the Dark Castle. She had been residing in the Dark One's castle for a few months and to say it was unexpected would be the understatement of the year. And yet, after all of the chaos the two of them have had to confront, after all of their bickering and arguments, Belle found she started to become more comfortable in the presence of the man who was her master.

Just that day, they had headed together towards the man who dared steal from Rumplestiltskin...who the young woman dared to free from his dungeons and from his torture. Of course the wizard was more than pissed and wished to go and murder the man, but the girl was of a different opinion, that nobody deserved such suffering and that there might be good reasonings behind someone trying to steal a wand. Of course, she was right when the thief, named Robin Hood, healed his pregnant lover, who seemed deathly ill, on the verge of entering the gates of Heaven. Even the wizard was not so cruel as to kill and leave a child fatherless.

They swiftly returned to the castle, not before Belle threw her arms around him, hugging him as close as she could, grateful for staving off the murderous instincts within him, that she knew came from the Dark One and not from Rumplestiltskin himself.

Of course, imagine her absolute surprise when, back at the castle, the man gifted her with a whole library, filled to the brim with books, more tomes than she could read in a lifestyle. Perhaps her initial perception of her master was not quite so right after all, if such a grand gesture told her anything. The sorcerer claimed it was just another room to dust and clean, but the young girl knew the truth, that the room had never existed in the castle before, which meant he had created a library for her from scratch, knowing of her passion for reading and learning.

That was a gift she was eternally grateful for, which was why, hours after he had offered it to her, Belle chose one of the tomes from the library and decided to sit on a chaise in front of the fireplace to read in peace.

Her chores for the day were done, their adventures were over and time finally came for some rest, which was why the young woman was found with her nose stuck in a book already. Her long chestnut locks were flowing down her shoulders and the back of the chaise, her hair now fully free from her half-up half-down style.

She allowed herself the pleasure of relaxation, taking a deep breath in and releasing it as she was captured into a new story, not evidently aware of her surroundings or of anything else but the smell of ink and parchment and the feel of the pages beneath her finger tips. Which was why she did not feel the shadowed presence of her master and perhaps new friend, Rumplestiltskin, in the doorway, watching.

They’d hiked hours to this remote location out on the trail, to find a scenic overlook that they had all to themselves. 

Gideon took one look at the breathtaking panorama and was bored after three seconds. He began to amuse himself by throwing rocks over the cliff, listening to hear them hit bottom. 

Rumple held Belle from behind, stealing an opportunity to smell her hair before taking in the view again. 

“Want to know the best part about this?” he asked softly.  

“Hmm?” 

“Not a single person we know could find us right now.” 

He could feel her smiling. 

“Good.”

Was it necessary for you to violate my rule and make this ask?

I have my rules for a reason.

I used the Rumbelle tag because, technically, IT IS the proper ship name for them. I used the tag accordingly because, although they may not be Once Upon a Time's Rumpelstiltskin and Belle, they're still Rumpelstiltskin and Belle. They're just different characters with the same names. There is no need to get all bent out of shape over it.

I mean, technically, it's the same Belle because the Belle from the 1991 Disney animated film "Beauty and the Beast" is the same character as Belle from ABC's "Once Upon a Time." She is based on the classic fairytale character and also takes inspiration from Ellie Fredricksen in the Disney/Pixar film "Up." Both versions of Belle share similar traits, including her love for books and her compassionate nature. However, the show adds its own twists and backstory to her character.

So please tell me again that it has nothing to do with it when literally one character is the same. There is a thing called the multiverse, you know.

It was just a crackship post. If you don't want to see my content in the tag, just block me or scroll on. If you read it carefully, you can clearly see that I said that I was poking fun at OUAT's Rumbelle.

What’s the slander squad?

The Stalk Squad are a few people—possibly even just one person—who are currently combing through my blog (which has been up and active since 2011) hunting for problematic things I’ve said to prove I’m an evil person and that my blog is a wretched hive of scum and villainy. There is a post currently going around the ST fandom that is worthy of quite the eyeroll if you know me at all. It’s a big mix of out of context caps from my blog and straight up lies, such as:

“Phoenix wrote a fic about 11-year-old Erica and 20-year-old Eddie!” Didn’t happen. I ship Erica with Dustin and Eddie with Chrissy. No one else.

“Okay, well Phoenix SUPPORTS fics about 11-year-old-Erica and 20-year-old Eddie” Nope. (I am vehemently against censorship, which means supporting dead doves and dead dove writers, so if you think I’m going to point at another writer who writes disturbing content so y’all can harass them? Forget it.)

“Phoenix AGES UP Erica to write smut about her!” Never wrote smut about Erica. Have written her at ages 16, with a crush on Dustin, and as an adult with two kids. Again. With Dustin.

“SHE REC’D A FIC ABOUT ERICA AND EDDIE” I rec’d a fic featuring adult Erica and adult Eddie that several friends of mine, who are more polyamorous with their Eddie ships than I am, really enjoyed. I haven’t read this fic. Because I like Hellcheer and Dusterica.

“She has a fic about 16-year-old Chrissy and adult Eddie” yep, I sure do. They ain’t real, friends. (Really enjoying a fic about Anna, from Grace Van Dien’s film Roost and Michael, Joseph Quinn’s character in Hoard and can I just say I love that Hellcheer is following in its parent Rumbelle’s footsteps in trying out Anyelle? Anyway, quite the disturbing age difference between Anna and Michael, and it is deliciously creepy, and guess what, no one is getting hurt because THEY AIN’T REAL.) (Yes, I have just decided Rumbelle is the parent of Hellcheer. The Rumbelle pipeline is REAL.)

“She rec’d a dead dove fic about Chrissy and Eddie” An anon linked me this fic to which I responded with a vague eyeball emoji. (I clicked on the fic, read the tags, decided they would be triggering for me, and did this wild thing called exiting out of a fic and moving on with my life.) Because you can do that. You can look at a fic and go “gross” or “this gives me the ick” or “wow this is violently triggering to me, sure glad the author utilized trigger warnings and tags to forewarn me about the content, thank you author, peace out”.

“She weaponizes her trauma as a CSA victim” I am literally just existing. I don’t send anons, I don’t send hate, I mainly just stay on my feed and answer asks that I get sent or occasionally explore the Hellcheer tag. I have been open about being a CSA victim, which makes the P*%$ accusations particularly galling. I would hazard a guess that creating a post to “callout” someone in an attempt to encourage others to harass, bully, and doxx someone else would be far more in the realm of “weaponizing trauma” than me stating I am a CSA victim and I am very against censorship of any kind, whether it’s Ron DeSantis banning books or teenagers whingeing about AO3 content they can easily filter out but are too used to being spoonfed algorithmic content.

“She ate the pretend fake baby of one writer and Eddie Munson!” Actually this is true, I did eat that baby, it was delicious sautéed in butter.

Dislike: Regina, Blue

Hate: Greg, Tamara, Cora

Season rating: 5/10

I hate hate hate the whole Greg and Tamara plot, also Cora x Rumple grossed me out, but there was a lot of Rumbelle content (it was really sad though)
